Norman Quick Facts

  • • Population: ~130,000 (3rd largest city in Oklahoma)
  • • OU Students: ~32,000 (adds significant traffic)
  • • Major Routes: I-35, Highway 9, Lindsey Street, Main Street
  • • Game Days: Add 80,000+ visitors on football Saturdays

Major Traffic Corridors

I-35: The Main Artery

Interstate 35 runs north-south through Norman, connecting to Oklahoma City (20 miles north) and Texas (65 miles south).

Rush Hour Hell Spots:

  • • Exit 110 (Lindsey Street) - 7:30-8:30 AM, 5-6 PM
  • • Exit 108 (Main Street) - Constant congestion
  • • Canadian River Bridge - Narrows to 2 lanes, frequent slowdowns
  • • Construction zones - Check ODOT before driving

Pro tip: If heading to OU from I-35 south, take Exit 106 (Indian Hills Road) to avoid Lindsey/Main traffic, then cut over on 24th Ave.

Highway 9: East-West Connector

State Highway 9 (also called Highway 9/Tecumseh Road) runs east-west, heavy with truck traffic.

Key Characteristics:

  • • Speed limit 55-65 mph (strictly enforced)
  • • High truck traffic from I-35 to Shawnee/OKC east side
  • • Multiple shopping center entrances = unexpected slowdowns
  • • I-35/Highway 9 interchange is a major bottleneck

Lindsey Street: Campus Corridor

Runs east-west through OU campus. Absolute nightmare during school hours and game days.

Avoid These Times:

  • • 7:45-8:15 AM (class start)
  • • 12:45-1:15 PM (lunch rush)
  • • 4:30-6 PM (commuter exodus)
  • • Any OU football game day (see section below)

OU Football Game Days: Survival Guide

Game days transform Norman into gridlock. Memorial Stadium holds 86,000+ and most arrive by car.

Affected Areas (4 hours before kickoff through 2 hours after):

  • • Campus Corner: Completely impassable
  • • Lindsey Street (Jenkins to I-35): Parking lot
  • • I-35 Exit 110: 1+ hour wait
  • • Main Street near campus: Bumper to bumper
  • • Downtown Norman: Packed with pre-game crowds

Game Day Routes to AVOID:

  • ✗ Lindsey Street (entire length)
  • ✗ Boyd Street near stadium
  • ✗ Jenkins Avenue
  • ✗ Asp Avenue
  • ✗ Any street within 1 mile of stadium

If You MUST Drive on Game Day:

  • • Use Rock Creek Road or 24th Ave as east-west alternatives
  • • Take I-35 Exit 106 or 113 instead of 110
  • • Allow 2x normal travel time
  • • Fill up gas BEFORE game day (stations near campus run out)
  • • Or better yet: stay home and watch on TV

Local Driving Quirks & Tips

Red Light Cameras

Norman has removed most red light cameras, but drive defensively at major intersections. Right turn on red is legal after complete stop.

School Zones

Multiple school zones with strictly enforced 25 mph limits during school hours (7-9 AM, 2:30-4 PM weekdays). Slow down and watch for crossing guards.

Potholes

Oklahoma's freeze-thaw cycles create massive potholes, especially February-April. Watch for hazards on Lindsey, Main, and residential streets. Report to Norman 311 app.

Pedestrians Near Campus

Students often cross mid-block or against lights near Campus Corner. Drive very defensively in this area, especially at night.
